Deciding to enter an addiction treatment program is a huge step in your recovery. But beginning the process includes researching and finding a treatment program. If you’ve begun this process, you already know how overwhelming it can be with the number of available treatment centers in the US.

Hopefully, to help minimize any stress you may feel, we’ve narrowed down a few things to keep in consideration – such as location, levels of care and accreditation – to help you find an effective program for drug or alcohol addiction. Not only will the best program provide you the best treatment, but you’ll also feel more confident in a maintained recovery overall.

What to look for when searching out a treatment center for addiction

If you don’t know what to look for in the first place, you’ll find yourself drowning in a bunch of options that might not even be what you need. To prevent this from happening, it’s helpful to first identify your goals and then look for treatment centers with programs that promise to help you meet them.

1. Don’t settle for the first option

Finding an outpatient drug rehab program is a big commitment. It is not a process that should be rushed or taken lightly.

When you make a significant purchase, such as buying a home or a car, you likely consider multiple options before making a decision. Take the same approach when seeking out a treatment program.

You are not required to stick with the first treatment center you visit or the first therapist you meet with. Take the time you need to get a feel for the center. Ask questions about treatment options. Make sure that it is a good fit for you. Make sure you like what they have to offer and that you can see yourself working with them successfully.

2. Look for accreditation

You should always seek out treatment centers with accreditation as these facilities have certain standards they are required to meet in order to keep their status; the higher the accreditation, the better the care you’re going to receive.

The two prominent addiction treatment accrediting agencies are The Joint Commission and CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Gaining a seal of approval from either agency indicates that a treatment center meets established standards that have been put in place to protect clients. Accrediting agencies analyze a treatment center’s policies, training process and more to ensure that clients will get the best possible treatment. Accredited centers have demonstrated that they can meet high standards for their staff and ability to care for clients.

When researching treatment centers, we strongly recommend only considering accredited ones.

3. Learn about the levels of care

It’s important to remember that, with any center you visit, there are likely various levels of care available. For instance, a center may offer inpatient or outpatient treatment options. They may recommend one-on-one therapy or group counseling sessions. Each option has its own benefits when recovering from addiction or substance abuse.

When speaking to a therapist or a center’s staff, ask questions about the treatment programs themselves. Is a detox program offered? Would you be able to do an intensive outpatient program in order to keep your job? Are aftercare programs included? Knowing this information can help you decide if a program is a good fit.

4. Consider the location

Another important factor when finding an outpatient treatment center is its location. A center that is close by may help you avoid extensive time and money spent on travel. It will also make it easier for family members to accompany you to treatment sessions. A strong support system is a powerful tool in recovery.

While location is important, it should not be your sole deciding factor. You are seeking treatment to support your individual needs and recovery. Don’t select a treatment center just for the sake of convenience. Leaving your hometown will offer you a dramatic chance at a reset and may give you a new perspective that can significantly enhance your recovery.

5. Learn about the insurance and payment options

The cost of treatment is always something to consider when searching for a treatment center. If you find a center or program that meets your needs, speak to the staff about payment options.

Learn about the different types of health insurance that treatment center accepts and if there are financing options available. Knowing all of these details up-front may make your decision easier.
