With spring in full bloom and summer right around the corner, now is the time to enjoy the outdoor season. This season provides a variety of activities that offer an alternative to drinking. If you recently completed treatment for alcohol abuse it is important to spend time participating in safe activities to celebrate your sobriety. There are a variety of ways to get involved with new hobbies or organizations and make new friends during this time.

Walking or Hiking Outdoors:
Warm weather provides the perfect opportunity for walking outdoors. Take the time to enjoy the scenery that spring and summer provide and develop a walking schedule. This will help to calm your mind and allow you to relax while also improving your physical health. Hiking is another activity to participate in during warm weather. Enjoy exploring the outdoors by identifying hiking spots and strolling through nature.

Golfing:
Another popular outdoor activity for spring and summer months is golfing. This activity can be enjoyed alone or with friends and family. Spend time playing a round of golf and perfecting your game. As with any sport, the more time spent practicing the better. Invest your days off on the golf course and you will be a pro in no time!

Swimming:
Depending on your location, swimming may be an activity that can only be enjoyed during spring and summer months. If you don’t have a pool that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this activity. Consider joining a swim club, or scouting swimming locations at local parks.

Attending an Outing at Your Local Park:
Many local parks offer recreational games, concerts, and events during spring and summer seasons. Consider attending one of these activities as an alternative to drinking or using substances during the spring and summer months. This activity will also provide an opportunity to connect with other individuals who share your interests. In addition to this, attending an event will provide a chance to make new friends that do not engage in drinking or substance abuse.

Volunteering:

There are many organizations such as local animal shelters, human service groups, and nonprofit organizations that seek volunteers to help with their events. Volunteering with one of these organizations is an excellent way to give back to your local community or favorite cause while becoming involved. Volunteering also provides the opportunity to connect with other likeminded individuals and meet a new group of friends to spend time with.

Take the time to enjoy the outdoors and invest in a new hobby. This will help you to reduce stress, improve your physical health, and connect with other likeminded individuals to ensure you have success during recovery.
